ハンノキとは、白樺と同じカバノキ科に属し、熱帯地域を中心に広く分布している落葉樹で、沖縄ではやんばる（北部）に多く自生しています。

水辺に根を張り、根の周辺に窒素を固定するバクテリアが共生するハンノキは、根に独自の肥料工場を持っているような木で、土壌肥沃度を高めて、他の植物の成長をも促進させる「恵みの木」でもあります。

ハンノキの土壌改良効果を体感していたやんばるのお百姓さんが、蒸留水を作り、農薬の代わりに使用したのがハンノキエキスの始まりです。有用な菌や微生物を育み、共生する力を持っていて、殺菌剤とは異なり、土壌を荒らさず、植物が成長するのに適した状態に近づけてくれる。そんなハンノキを用いてつくられた植物性飲用エキス。
